Daily Word: guess the five-letter word

A new five-letter word every day. Six guesses, three colors and one chance to keep your streak.

In short

Guess the hidden five-letter word in six tries. Green means the right letter in the right spot, yellow means the letter is elsewhere in the word, grey means it is not in the word. One new word every day.

How to play Daily Word

  1. Type any five-letter word with the on-screen keyboard or your physical keyboard and press Enter.
  2. Each tile turns a color: green means the letter is correct and in the right position.
  3. Yellow means the letter is in the word but in a different position.
  4. Grey means the letter does not appear in the word (or not as many times as you used it).
  5. Use the clues to narrow down the word. You have six guesses in total.
  6. Everyone playing in English gets the same word today. A new word appears at midnight.

Tips and strategy

  • Open with a word that has several different common letters, such as three consonants and two vowels.
  • Use your second guess to test new letters rather than repeating ones you already know.
  • Remember that letters can repeat: a word can contain the same letter twice.
  • A yellow letter tells you two things: it is in the word, and it is not in that position.
  • When only one or two letters are missing, list the possible words before guessing so you don't waste turns.

Frequently asked questions

How many guesses do I get?

You get six guesses to find the five-letter word. If you don't find it, the answer is shown at the end.

What do the colors mean?

Green: right letter, right spot. Yellow: the letter is in the word but somewhere else. Grey: the letter is not in the word.

What happens with double letters?

Colors are counted per letter. If the answer has one E and you type two, only one E is marked green or yellow and the other is grey.

Is it the same word for everyone?

Yes. Everyone who plays in the same language gets the same word on the same day, so you can compare results.

Can I play yesterday's word?

Yes. Use the arrow next to the puzzle number or open the archive to play earlier words.

Is this game available in other languages?

Yes. The word game has its own word list and keyboard in more than twenty languages. Switch the language in the menu.
