Daily Country: guess the mystery country

A geography game for map lovers: follow the distance and the compass arrow to the mystery country.

In short

Guess the mystery country in eight tries. After each guess you see the distance in kilometres, an arrow pointing toward the answer and a proximity percentage. Two hints available. New country every day.

How to play Daily Country

  1. Type the name of any country and pick it from the list.
  2. You will see how far your guess is from the mystery country, measured between the approximate centres of both countries.
  3. An arrow shows the direction from your guess toward the answer.
  4. The percentage shows how close you are: 100% means you found it.
  5. You have eight guesses. You can reveal two hints: the continent, then the first letter.

Tips and strategy

  • Start with a large, central country to get a useful first direction.
  • Follow the arrow, but remember that distances are between country centres, so neighbours can still be hundreds of kilometres apart.
  • Use the distance to draw an imaginary circle on the map: the answer lies on that circle.
  • Combine two guesses: where their circles cross is where the answer is.
  • Save the hints for when you are stuck between a few countries.

Frequently asked questions

How is the distance calculated?

The distance is the great-circle distance between the approximate geographic centres of the two countries, so it is an estimate rather than a border-to-border measurement.

Which countries can be the answer?

All sovereign states of reasonable size can be the answer. Very small states and disputed territories can be guessed but are never chosen as the daily answer.

Can I type country names in another language?

Yes. Names are shown in the language of the page, and in most languages you can also type the English name.

What do the hints show?

The first hint reveals the continent of the mystery country. The second shows its first letter.

Is it the same country everywhere?

Yes. Everyone in the world gets the same mystery country on the same day, whatever language they play in.
